Biker blames lack of road upkeep for deadly crash

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A group of concerned motorcycle riders are blaming a deadly crash on a lack of road maintenance by the state D.O.T.

Last Saturday, Marine Corporal Johnathon Hatch was killed in a single car accident at the intersection of 3rd Street, Burnett Boulevard, and Carolina Beach Road.  According to a spokesperson from the N.C. D.O.T., a field investigation is conducted after each fatal accident on state maintained roads.

Motorcycle riders like Christopher Bifani say better lighting, more reflectors, and brighter paint on the median could have prevented the wreck.  "If we put the same amount of zeal into road maintenance that we put into the drunk driving crusade, we will see the same kind of results," said Bifani.  He added, "The goal ultimately is less fatalities and this is something we can address proactively."

Before the D.O.T. can recommend any changes or improvements to the intersection, they must first complete a field investigation of the intersection using an analysis of the crash history at the location.

After receiving the necessary information, the D.O.T. has six months to conduct a full investigation.
