NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Residents in a neighborhood in Castle Hayne are trapped between a sinkhole and a dirt road under water.

The road at the intersection of Linville Drive and Mossy Rock Court started caving in a few weeks ago and has become a big mess.

There is a road block in place to keep cars from driving near the sinkhole as a safety precaution.

The developer should be the one to fix the problem, but in this case the developer has filed for bankruptcy.

County engineers said everyone needs to make sure they double check their leases and understand who owns the property around them. They plan to fix the sinkhole and hope to get it done as soon as they can.

Jim Iannucci with County Stormwater Engineering said he's received a few bids for the project and hopes to have plans finalized this week.

Iannucci hopes to have the sinkhole repaired within the next two weeks, but said it should be fixed by the end of the year.

According to Iannucci, crews will have to repair the storm pipe, the box which contains it, and the road above it.
