WILMINGTON, NC(WECT) – Many have heard of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but Saturday was all about small businesses.
Across the nation, small businesses offered deals and discounts trying to get customers to come out and support them, and Wilmington was no exception.
Crowds of people walked around all day toting their shopping bags, and business owners say big pushes like this really help them out
"Oh, it's incredibly helpful, especially in a city like Wilmington, where you are talking about the winter season versus the summer tourist seasons," said Lauren Bardou of Aqua Fedora, a boutique.
At the Hot Pink Cake Stand, everything is made from scratch.
"There are a lot of ways that I could run this business that would be simpler and less expensive for me, but that's not the kind of business I want to have," explained owner Jody Carmichael.
She says, it isn't easy.
"Consistency, marketing isn't easy to do and you don't have the backing of that corporation," said Carmichael. She also says, events like Small Business Saturday, really help them out.
"Oh, it's wonderful, I wish they could do this all the time," agreed Mary Sedcieski, the owner of GEMS4U (www.gemsbymary.com). She says she likes owning a small business because you get to meet with customers one-on-one.
Those walking around downtown Wilmington said they don't want the City to lose it's small business charm.
"We want to support small businesses, because we don't want them to go out of business," said Sharon Simental. She says that's why she showed up, and shopped.
