WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - One man spent his Thanksgiving miles away from home. Chris Nicholas is running from Portland, Maine to Miami, Florida to San Diego, California to Portland, Oregon.

He has only completed 1,000 of the 6,000 miles on his Run to Finish journey, but says he's seen a lot alone the way. He was in New York after Hurricane Sandy hit.

"When you are running you can really see the devastation up close, people without power, people waiting in line with gas cans," said Nicholas.

He was also in Washington, DC on Election Night. "There were people running into the streets when Obama won," recalled Nicholas.

Nicholas averages 30 to 40 miles a day, and says sometimes it's hard to keep going. Mentally, he can go days without talking to be people, and physically it is exhausting.  However, he pushes on, knowing every step will help raise more money for the three non-profits he supports.

"Wounded Warrior Project, St. Jude's Hospital, and the Make-a-Wish Foundation," said Nicholas. "I'm running and then hopefully people will see my efforts and then contribute."
