WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - If you looked carefully, you may have seen some "street turkeys" around the Wilmington Wednesday.

Actually, they were members of the men's Bible study group and outreach committee of Wrightsville United Methodist Church.

This was the fourth year the church members have been at local Harris-Teeter supermarkets on the day before Thanksgiving, collecting food and donations for the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina at Wilmington.

They are hoping to help replenish the Food Bank's supplies of items, which runs low during the holidays, trying to help those in need in the four local counties local Food Bank serves.

"Each year, the stats keep rising, I think seventy thousand people in the four county region our Food Bank supplies don't know where their next meal is coming from, 20,000 of them are children and 5,500 them are senior citizens," said Jai Isear, a member of the Wrightsville United Methodist Church and Street Turkeys organizer. "That is just disconcerting, so we want to do as much as we can, to try, as a community to reach out and help those among us in need."

This year, the "turkeys" have a website where you can make online donations. The "turkeys" collected donated food and money at four Harris-Teeter stores until 7:00 Wednesday night, but you can still make an online donation on their website, www.streetturkeyswilmington.org until Sunday, November 25.
