WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A 13-year-old from Wilmington was one of three young people with Type 1 Diabetes to ring the closing bell Tuesday at the NASDAQ stock market closing bell in New York City.

Carr Bender was joined by Danielle Adams and Sam Tullman in ringing the bell around 4 p.m.

Carr is the son of Bridget and Michael Bender of Wilmington.

He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2008. Bridget says this opportunity has been a year and a half in the making. Carr's parents bid on the experience at the annual Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation gala in Raleigh in 2011.

Carr and his family also got to visit Radio City Music Hall while in New York, and went to the NBC Experience store as well.
