Fire Department offers turkey cooking tipsWILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - With the holiday's approaching, the Wilmington Fire Department is warning people to be careful cooking in the kitchen.
Cooking fires accounted for about half of the house fires across the US just a couple of years ago. However, major fires aren't the only concern, fire fighters say you should also be careful about burns.
You should try turning the handles of cooking pots towards the back of the stove. You also shouldn't put on wet oven mitts because they carry the heat and can burn you.
"A lot of people don't think it can happen to them but statistics tell us that 900 homes a year are damaged a year just from turkey frying around the holidays, cooking, and unattended cooking," said David Hines, with the Wilmington Fire Department.
Frying a turkey can also be dangerous, you should make sure the turkey is completely thaw and that there is three feet of space around the fryer.
