BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office is investigating a homicide of an 86-year-old woman.
Detectives tell WECT.com Linnie Mae Ward was found dead in her home in the 1970 block of Gwynn Road in Longwood on Tuesday.
Our news crew went to the home Wednesday night, which is still surrounded by police tape.
A deputy found her body Tuesday around noon, when he was met by a relative of Ward's who was at her home to check on her. Ward was found unresponsive.
Following an autopsy, the sheriff's office said it was determined that foul play is suspected, and the cause of death has been identified as a combination of blunt force trauma and other injuries.
Ward lived off of a dirt road, in a secluded area of Longwood. While there are no immediate neighbors, those who live nearby said they are concerned and scared about the crime.
Family members of Ward told us they had "no comment" when we approached them.
Sheriff Ingram is offering a $1,000 reward from the sheriff's office to anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect(s) responsible for Ward's death. Ingram has also requested a governor's reward.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff's office at 910-253-2777 or Detective Kyle Jones at 910-880-4944.
