WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The University of North Carolina Wilmington fired an employee in September who was arrested on several counts of child pornography.

According to officials, Harvey Porter, a former electronics specialist with the business affairs department for UNCW, was charged in August with six counts of second degree exploitation following an investigation by the NC Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce.

According to documents, Porter asked the university to consider his 16 years of positive contributions as well as potential future services to the university before letting him go.

In a letter to Porter, the university said they appreciated his contributions but his recent misconduct outweighed the potential positives Porter could bring.

Porter has been employed with the university since 1996. He was originally hired as a UNCW police officer but took a voluntary pay decrease in 1997 to become a Computing Support Technician.

In 2005, Porter took a new position with UNCW as an Electronics Technician. He was making $40,000 a year.
