UNCW students pull fire truck, raise money for memorialNEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - UNCW students took turns pulling fire trucks on Sunday afternoon, in hopes of raising money for the Wilmington Fire Fighters Memorial.
The building is being constructed right now and will hold steel from the World Trade Center. Seven bronze statutes will also be built to honor seven Wilmington firefighters who died in the line of duty.
Students in Pi Kappa Alpha teamed up with the City of Wilmington and New Hanover County's Fire Department to hold their second annual Fire Truck Pull. Organizers say this year, they had twice the turnout last year, with hundreds of students showing up.
"It's heavier than it looks, it takes a bit to get it going but once you do it rolls pretty easy," said Kyle Schimelfeig, and organizer.
The students we're hoping to raise $6 or $7,000.
