NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A woman accused of trying to kill her 9-year-old daughter and pet cat made her first court appearance Tuesday.
According to the sheriff's office, Jeannie Lynn Marvel was arrested and charged Friday with attempted first degree murder and felonious cruelty to animals.
Marvel asked for a court appointed attorney Tuesday and told the judge she doesn't have a job, assets and no vehicles. She said her mother owns the house she lives in with her sister, who pays the bills.
Deputies said they responded to a call September 9 for an unresponsive female at home along Scratch Court.
In the 911 call, an unnamed friend says, "I'm at my friend's house and I just found her on the floor." The woman proceeds to tell dispatch officials she thinks her friend may have fallen or slipped.
When authorities arrived, they found Marvel on the ground and unresponsive.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies also found Marvel's 9-year-old daughter and the family cat under the influence of an impairing substance or possibly poison.
Both Marvel and her daughter were taken to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Marvel was under medical observation until November 9 when she was arrested by detectives.
Her daughter was treated and is in the custody of the Department of Social Services, and the cat was treated and is under veterinarian care.
Neighbors said they would occasionally hear screaming coming from the house and weren't surprised when they heard what happened. They also said Marvel would often speed through the neighborhood.
Marvel's next court date is slated for November 29.
