WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The City of Wilmington plans to clearly designate more spaces in Wilmington for taxis only after midnight.
The city marked some spaces in the 100 block of North Front Street in September in an effort to keep drivers from parking in the spots reserved for taxis after midnight when they are most needed as bars close.
According to the city, tickets issued in the designated parking spaces have decreased by more than 75 percent, while there was no decrease in the parking spaces that were not marked.
Taxi companies say the new markings are working and business owners confirm customers are using the marked spaces during normal business hours.
Because of the initial success of the pilot program, the City of Wilmington plans to install more pavement markings next week in the first block of South Front Street.
