NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A woman in our area is sharing her personal nightmare after she said her social security number was stolen.
Scams happen every day, but Sandra David never thought it would happen to her.
"It frightened me," she said. "I said this man has all my information."
David said the alleged agency actually called her landlord, not her cell phone, and told her landlord that debt collectors were looking for her.
The person over the phone rattled off David's person information, including her social security number, and then demanded that she pay thousands of dollars for a credit card.
David said she has never received a bill or an outstanding notice because she does not have a Capital One MasterCard. In fact, David has never had a credit card in her entire life.
David explained she asked the company to mail her some more information about the situation.
"I need you to send me documentation and he said no you won't cooperate so the next thing is you'll have police at your door."
The man on the phone identified himself as Michael Owens from Franklin Moss Attorneys. Owens claims they operate out of Lewes, Delaware, but when WECT.com did a search online for the agency an address in New York came up online.
Franklin Moss in New York called WECT on Friday to address the issue.
In a phone interview Moss said, "I don't know anything about this. I don't do this kind of work. I don't have an office in Delaware. If someone is using my name they are doing it unlawfully."
WECT.com called the number given to David and when we started asking questions about where they are from and what they do they hung up on us.
If you Google search "Franklin Moss Scam" a number of testimonies come up about people getting the same call from a similar number.
David filed a report Thursday with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office.
