BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Family and friends are mourning the loss of a firefighter in Bladen County.
Captain David Tatum, 55, worked at the White Oak Fire Department and responded to a vehicle fire Monday where he complained about feeling sick.
Tatum was taken to the hospital and passed away Tuesday.
Family members said Tatum had been with the Tar Heel rescue squad since 1976 where he served as an EMT. For the last 13 years he has been a member of Dublin, Tar Heel,, and White Oak fire dept.
Tatum received the firefighter of the year award in 2006 from Dublin Fire Department and won the firefighter of the year in White Oak in 2011.
Tatum is survived by his wife Regina "Boots" Tatum and his children, David Tatum Jr., Chris Tatum, Lisa Mahoney, Michelle Brown and Thomas Layton. He had 15 grandchildren.
Family members have arranged for a full firefighter funeral service with honors for Tatum.
The visitation will be Friday, Nov 9, from 6-8 p.m. at Bladen Gaskins funeral home in Elizabethtown. Funeral services will be Saturday, Nov 10, at 1 p.m. at White Oak Baptist with burial following immediately at the Grimes Tatum cemetery in Dublin on Owen Hill Rd.
