BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Voters turned out in the masses for the 2012 General Elections and the preliminary results are in for Brunswick County

County Commissioner District 3

After a heated primary battle between four Republicans for the District 3 seat on the Board of County Commissioners voters only had one choice when they cast their ballots on Tuesday.

Republican Pat Sykes won the race for the District 3 seat. Her name was the only one on the ballot. In the hotly contested primary, she defeated incumbent Charles Warren, Joe Agavino and Jwantana Frink. Sykes got 49 percent of the vote in the Republican primary, incumbent Charles Warren only received 9 percent of the vote.

Sykes and Warren have had issues in the past when Warren served on the county's social services board. Warren had Sykes and a reporter removed from a DSS meeting in December. Sykes said her decision to run for office had nothing to do with Warren.

County Commissioner District 4

Republican Scott Phillips defeated Democrat challenger Brenda Faye McMillian and will serve another term as county commissioner.

Phillips won 60.53 percent of the vote compared to McMillan's 39.47 percent. Phillips has been a Brunswick County commissioner since 2008. McMillan is a relative new-comer to politics in Brunswick County.

County Commissioner District 5

People living in Brunswick County's 5th District will soon see a new face on the county's board of commissioners. Republican Frank Williams defeated Democratic challenger Michael Ballard for the seat.

Williams won 62.06 percent to Ballard's 37.94 percent. Long-time commissioner and board chairman Bill Sue decided not to see reelection for commissioner. Sue served as a commissioner since 1994.

Williams is a Leland resident. He released the following statement regarding his election:

I am humbled that the voters of Brunswick County have chosen me as the next County Commissioner from District 5.  This is both a great honor and a tremendous responsibility, and it is one I take very seriously.  I am grateful for the support and help of the many volunteers who assisted with my campaign; tonight's victory would not have been possible without them.  I thank Michael Ballard for his willingness to put his name on the ballot and commend him for the type of campaign he ran.  I also thank outgoing Commissioner Bill Sue for his many years of service to our county.  Most importantly, I am thankful that God has allowed me to live in a country where the people get to choose their leaders and that he has allowed me this opportunity. Now, I am ready to get to work serving the people of Brunswick County.
