NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - New Hanover County's Board of Education will welcome two new members next year, as voters elected Tammy Covil, Lisa Estep and Jeanette Nichols to make the decisions that will directly affect the school system.
Covil, a Republican, stepped onto the political scene for her first time with a campaign for school board. The newcomer served on a number of PTA's before throwing her name in the race. Covil has supported the right of parents to choose where their children attend school, including charter schools.
Estep, a Republican, stepped into the realm of public service for the first time this year. The mother of five has said she is not in favor of a tax increase to help support public education. Estep has said that she agrees with parents' right to choose where their children go to school.
Nichols, a Republican, has served on the Board of Education since 2000. This year marks the licensed teacher and principal's fourth time campaigning for a seat on the board. Her fellow board members have appointed her to the role of vice-chair for 10 of her 12 years of service.
