NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - In what was possibly one of the most heated races in the state, Republican incumbent Thom Goolsby has beat Democratic challenger Deborah Butler in the State Senate District 9 race.
This race gained national attention after Butler released an ad accusing Goolsby of supporting legislation requiring women to use a transvaginal wand before getting an abortion.
The two combined to raise more than $600,000 of campaign funds.
Goolsby earned 45,179 votes, or 54 percent, while Butler earned 38,631 votes, or 46 percent.
