
Willie Stargell fans purchased a total of 8,220,355 stamps.WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Willie Stargell fans can celebrate. They stepped up to the plate and succeeded in getting the most stamps batted in.
The Post Office held a friendly competition among fans of four Major League Baseball All-Stars that are featured on Forever stamps.
The pennant race started in April with the pre-sale of the stamps and wrapped up at the end of the World Series.
"Fan support of their favorite players was so strong that we decided to continue this friendly competition through the end of the World Series," said Stamp Services Manager Stephen Kearney referring to the 2.29 million stamps pre-ordered. "I encourage fans to continue supporting their favorite player while the stamps are still available."
Stargell fans purchased a total of 8,220,355 stamps. So far, more than 32 million stamps have been sold.

Stargell lived in Wilmington until his death in 2001. The left-handed slugger was known for knocking home runs out of the ballpark. His outstanding performance on the field landed him in Major League Baseball's Hall of Fame.
