WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Wilmington fire officials responded to a house fire located on a dirt road off of Independence Boulevard near Portofino Court, according to New Hanover County dispatch officials.
The specific address of the home is not known.
Wilmington Fire Department Chief Born said that the home is abandoned, and that it appears to be a homeless camp with evidence of clothes lying around. They think someone may have started the fire in order to get warm, and it got out of control.
According to Chief Born, four fire engines from the city and two fire trucks from the county responded to the fire and had it under control within 20 minutes. The origin of the fire is still unknown. The Wilmington Fire Department is still investigating.
