WILMINGTON,NC (WECT)- An impressive roster of celebrities is set to for Wilmington for the 10th Annual Willie Stargell Celebrity Golf Tournament to fight kidney disease from Friday, November 9 – Sunday, November 11, 2012 at the Country Club of Landfall.
Some of the more than 40 celebrities in attendance include Giancarlo Esposito of NBC's Revolution, Baseball Hall of Fame Member Joe Morgan, Grizz Chapman of NBC's 30 Rock, and Insanity Fitness Trainer Shaun T. The weekend long event includes an autograph session that is open to the public, the golf tournament and an auction dinner and dance where attendees have the chance to win tickets to the 2013 Masters.
"When I come to the dialysis center, it really is like a family. You make friends with the staff members and other patients," said Martha Carson, a 6-year dialysis patient.
The Willie Stargell Celebrity Golf Tournament raises money for the Willie Stargell Foundation to fight kidney disease in honor of Willie Stargell who died of the disease in 2001. Stargell was a Major League Baseball Player for the Pittsburgh Pirates and was inducted in to the National Hall of Fame in 1988, his first year of eligibility. Through funds raised at last year's event, the foundation contributed $5,000 each to the UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University's Transplant Outreach Programs; $10,000 to the DaVita Emergency Fund; and $30,000 to the Willie "Pops" Stargell Kidney Dialysis Center at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, which just used the grant to purchase two new dialysis machines for patient care.
