RALEIGH, NC (AP/WECT) – Walter Dalton's campaign today filed a complaint with the North Carolina State Board of Elections against opponent Pat McCrory and his campaign.

Attorney Jerry Meek, representing the Dalton campaign, requested an investigation into whether the McCrory campaign reported unlawful payments for a flight for South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley to attend McCrory events in September. Meek questioned whether nearly $2,500 worth of contributions from a Fayetteville couple for the flight are actually illegal corporate donations. Meek also wrote in a letter to Elections Director Gary Bartlett there is nothing in the McCrory campaign's latest finance report about Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, who attended campaign events on behalf of the former Mayor of Charlotte.

"Pat McCrory likes to brag about his so-called clean ethical record, but he doesn't seem to think the same laws that apply to everyone else apply to him," Dalton for Governor spokesman Schorr Johnson said in an e-mail to media on Wednesday. "McCrory's campaign appears to have violated the very same laws that caused the scandals he so eagerly criticizes. Going back to 2008, McCrory has a pattern of skirting campaign finance law. The candidate is ultimately personally responsible for their reports and that is why the State Board of Elections must investigate Pat McCrory and determine if he broke the law."

"Walter Dalton couldn't have picked a better day than Halloween to file this ridiculous complaint to the State Board of Elections," Brian Nick, McCrory's campaign spokesman said in an e-mail response to WECT. "The flights Dalton questions were handled in accordance with campaign finance law and this so called complaint is completely frivolous. Walter Dalton should be ashamed of himself for continuing his desperate and negative campaign until the very end."

Nick said the Republican Governors Association was responsible for Walker's flight.

The State Board of Elections' executive director says the complaint will be considered after the election.
