WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) - Danny Ray Nobles was found guilty Tuesday afternoon of first degree murder for killing Thomas Melvin.
Nobles was sentenced to life without parole, according to the District Attorney's office.
According to police, Nobles shot Melvin a dozen times in January 2009 with a rifle in the Saw Mill apartments when Melvin was getting out of his car.
Officials say Nobles even continued shooting Melvin when Melvin fell to the ground.
"This is a case of cold blooded murder and we thank the jury for reaching a just decision," said District Attorney Jon David in a press release. "We acknowledge that Mr. Nobles has a long history of mental illness; however, this is not an excuse for his behavior and today a dangerous man has been removed from our community."
According to investigators, Nobles and Melvin were neighbors who did not get along.
