PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The worst of Hurricane Sandy has passed our area as she continues to travel to the north east. However, the Cape Fear area is still getting some of the storm's residual weather.
The windy weather is causing strong rip currents. Emergency management officials in Pender County said they are going to assess the damage to the beach towns. The goal is to see how much sand was lost and check in on any property damage, too.
The Surf City tourism director said Pender County was lucky it didn't get much damage, and the storm happened out of tourism season.
"The good news is this happened late in the season, and the snow birds are pretty well through now, so this is a huge issue that we didn't have to deal with this weekend, and we're all very thankful for that," said Allan Libby.
Officials in Pender County said they're more prepared for the next weather event. Just this past weekend, emergency management got a high-tech communications center trailer, as well as their emergency pet shelter trailer.
