Sandy forces NCDOT to close portions of N.C. 12

Posted: Updated:

RALEIGH, NC  - (WECT) - According to a release from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, flooding from Hurricane Sandy has closed N.C. 12 in Dare County from south of the Oregon Inlet bridge to Rodanthe.

NCDOT says there are also reports of overwash on N.C. 12 in Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk and flooding in Rodanthe.

Overwash was reported in Hatteras at Buxton and north of Hatteras Village.  Flooding has also been reported at the village of Ocracoke.

NCDOT crews are looking at the damage, but because of the conditions it's difficult for them to tell how bad the roads are and how quickly the roads will reopen.

Most ferries were temporarily closed as Hurricane Sandy approached.  By 8 p.m. last night, the NCDOT's Ferry Division had suspended all ferries as conditions worsened.

This morning, the Southport-Fort Fisher route reopened.  All other routes remain closed until conditions improve.
