WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) - The PPD Beach2Battleship race will bring 2,000 racers and their families to the Wilmington area. Racers will be coming from 45 different states and 9 different countries from as far away as Australia. Area businesses say events like this are extremely helpful during the off season.
At Wrightsville Beach, you can see 'No Vacancy' signs hanging at the Summer Sands Hotel. The Director of Sales and Marketing at the Blockade Runner says he expects their hotel will also fill up.
"To be able to fill up in November, October is important to us," said Jason St. Clair. Restaurants on the island say they also expect to see a business boost.
"To put it simply it keeps the lights on," said James Rivenbark, the chef at the South Beach Grill. "We depend a lot on the summertime tourist business to keep us afloat throughout the winter and our locals and events like this keeps the lights on in the wintertime."
In a release the Wilmington and Beaches Convention & Visitors Bureau says they expect the event to bring in around $3.3 million to the local economy.
