WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – Leaders in Wrightsville Beach will meet to hear what residents have to say about changing a zoning ordinance.
Officials with the New Hanover County School System have been trying to rent out classrooms at Wrightsville Beach Baptist Church, but they had to get approval from town aldermen.
Before any decision can be made, town leaders have to give the public a chance to speak about changing the zoning ordinance to allow the students inside the classrooms at the church.
Wrightsville Beach Town Manager Bob Simpson said the town could vote on the issue at Thursday night's meeting.
Town leaders will then let school officials know when they can start busing students to the church for classes.
School officials and parents said they've been over-crowded since day one so they hope to get students inside the new space as soon as possible.
Town leaders will also discuss other items on the agenda including scuba diving, spear fishing and snorkeling at Mercer's Pier. New Hanover County has proposed to provide the town with an operating location in the county's emergency operations center. They will also provide an update on the town's search for a new manager.
