On October 8th, collection agency Rapid Recovery Solution comments on an article published by Reuters concerning the head of an Italian tax collection agency who, along with four employees, spent millions of collected dollars on themselves.
According to the article, the head of Tributi Italia Giuseppe Saggese and four additional employees are under fire for spending a stolen $129.35 million of collected tax money on extravagant items like yachts and private planes. “Tributi Italia (Italy Taxes) collected local taxes under contract for 400 town councils, but finance police in the northern city of Genoa said the agency's boss, Giuseppe Saggese, set up a system to siphon funds into the agency's own bank accounts,” Reuters reports.
The CEO for the collection agency Rapid Recovery Solution John Monderine responds, “This is just disgusting! How can the government collectors get away with this? I think stronger laws should be in place.” The article states that Italian Prime Minster Mario Monti is taking action to reduce tax evasion; however it has resulted in tougher measures taken by collection agencies.
According to the post, “The news will infuriate Italians who have had to dig deep to pay higher taxes, imposed to rein in the country's massive debt, while watching a succession of scandals involving the misuse of public funds”.
