WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – Authorities are investigating a boat collision that happened in Wrightsville Beach early Friday morning.
According to officers with the wildlife commission, alcohol played a factor in the boat crash.
New Hanover County 911 Dispatch said an onlooker spotted a boat overturned in Banks Channel at 2:22 a.m. The boat was floating about 400 feet north of the Blockade Runner.
According to wildlife officials, a 20-foot boat and an 18-foot boat collided with the larger boat jumping on top of the smaller one.
Emergency crews arrived on scene with the Wrightsville Beach Fire Department, Wrightsville Beach Police Department, Coastguard, and Wildlife.
Five men were reportedly rescued from the water, and two were taken to the hospital for treatment but are expected to be okay. Officials said everyone has been accounted for.
Sea Tow workers said it took them about two hours to clear the scene.
Wildlife officials are taking over the investigation and charges are pending.
