CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - The Town of Carolina Beach has until the end of December to move most everything off of a property it has leased from Sunny Point for decades. The property is off of Dow Road and serves as a buffer zone for the military ocean terminal at Sunny Point.

The military did give the town an extension to move several dumpsters, they have until March of 2013 to do so. However, everything else, from a pubic works facility, to several sheds, to a garage, to even a greenhouse must be gone by the end of the year.

The town board agreed to send a letter to the military, informing them that they are complying with the lease and are in the process of moving everything off of the property.

Town leaders also discussed their options, in terms of where they can move the equipment and the around 30 people who work in the Public Works Department.  One suggestion was to station them at the police training facility for the short-term.

"We've looked at a lot of options," said Tim Owens, the town's manager. "At this point we are going to bring a lot of those employees to the Town Hall as a temporary fix and move forward on a daily basis as far as operations go."

Other options included buying or leasing property. The town has a budget of $38,000 to work with.

The town is allowed to store some of the items on the Sunny Point property, if they are granted permission to build a fence, which would surround one acre of land. They also have to have all of the items they would store approved by the military.

There will be a public hearing on October 9, to discuss the possibility of using the town's property off of Spartenburg Avenue.
