WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - It's been a little more than 24 hours since a Hoggard High School student gave birth to a baby.
The birth took place just as the bell was ringing to let students out, according to school officials.
Many have called the school nurse, Renee Tootoo, a hero because of her actions.
Tootoo said she's seen her fair share of scrapes and bruises during her three years as a school nurse at Hoggard, but said she's never delivered a baby.
"You never know what's going to walk through the door at any given moment and you have to be as prepared as you can be and that's what happened yesterday," she said.
A call came in to New Hanover County 911 notifying dispatchers that a student had given birth in the nurse's room at Hoggard.
"I knew I needed help and I needed it quickly," said Tootoo. "We do have supplies, but I would say it is limited. We do rely on 911 to help us if there is an emergency, but we have to handle the situation until they arrive."
According to the 911 call, the baby was born by the time emergency officials showed up at the school.
WECT.com tried to find out how mother and baby are doing after the birth, but school officials could not release that information.
