HAMPSTEAD, NC (WECT) - Jim Clanahan will take over as the girls varsity basketball coach at Topsail high school.

Topsail athletic director BJ Horne confirmed the hire Wednesday afternoon.

"We interviewed five candidates for the position." Horne said.  "His experience and the respect and admiration that our students already have for him are what attracted us."

Clanahan, who began teaching at Topsail this year, is currently the head coach of the junior varsity football team and also serves as an assistant to Bryan Davis on the varsity squad.

Prior to teaching at Topsail, Clanahan won a Georgia boys state championship as a head coach and has more than 20 years of coaching experience, 15 as a head coach.  He was most recently an assistant coach for the varsity girls team at Peachtree Ridge in Georgia in 2011.  His son, James, was the program's head coach.

Clanahan takes over for Sarah Graves who resigned prior to the start of the school year to accept a teaching position at Forrest Hills Elementary.

Graves had been at Topsail for five seasons, her team advanced to the 2A playoffs last year finishing with a 13-12 overall record.
