WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – The Wrightsville Beach drawbridge will be closed tonight from 11:30pm to 5am tomorrow morning. Officials say those planning on commuting between Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach need to plan accordingly.
According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the 55-year-old drawbridge will be closed or partially closed at various times between October and mid-March 2013 for a bridge rehabilitation project.
The NCDOT said all four lanes of the bridge that crosses the Intracoastal Waterway between Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach will be closed overnight several times during the project.
The first overnight closure will be 11:30 Wednesday night thru 5:00 Thursday morning.
Police officers will be stationed on either side of the bridge, with only emergency vehicles allowed to cross.
According to the NCDOT, the other overnight work will require closing three of the four lanes, with eastbound and westbound drivers alternatively using a single lane. A traffic light will be installed to direct traffic during those times.
The NCDOT said the bridge rehabilitation project includes the installation of a new steel grid floor, upgrades to the operator house, and replacement of motors, locks and other functioning elements.
