WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Ogden Elementary and Forest Hills Elementary students walked to school Wednesday morning - not just to learn but to send a message as well.

The message is about safety. Many neighborhoods are close enough to the schools for walking, however some of them run along busy, dangerous roads.

"The New Hanover County school system is currently implementing a 3-stage project to put sidewalks and bike passes for students to get to school in a safe way," said Michelle Hughes, a health and wellness PTA member.

At 7:15 a.m., Safe Kids Cape Fear, New Hanover Co. sheriff's deputies and several other volunteers assisted dozens of children in a safety walk from four different spots in New Hanover County.

"We not only want to stress the safety issue, but the health and wellness aspect of walking to school as well," said Hughes. "Getting kids up and moving at the start of the day gets their blood pumping and gets them ready for the start of their day."

Wednesday's walk was part of International Walk to School Day.
