NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The New Hanover County Public Schools System has saved nearly a million dollars in the first year of its energy savings program, according to a release from its program partner.
EduCon out of Winston-Salem has been working with the school system for the past year on reducing energy consumption and costs. Tuesday night, the company told the Board of Education that it saved $990,000. If they take rate increases into account, they say the savings is $1.479 million.
The goal had been $800,000. They focused on cutting energy services, including electricity, natural gas and propane. EduCon had an on-site energy manager who worked with school employees on finding energy savings this past year.
In 2011, WECT's Jon Evans investigated how often lights are left on overnight in the county. His piece included a look at our local schools as well.
