BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The mayor of Boiling Spring Lakes was charged Monday on four outstanding warrants.
Mayor Richard White faces three warrants for sexual battery and a fourth for assault on a female, according to officials. He was released on an unsecured bond.
White's attorney Bruce Mason sent out a news release Monday afternoon stating that they believe the allegations are false. Mason says the alleged illegal conduct occurred more than six months ago and were already ruled unsubstantiated by law enforcement.
The news release names the woman who brought the charges. (WECT typically does not identify alleged victims of sexual crimes.)
"The accuser in this matter has a substantial history of false claims against judges, law enforcement and other public officials. She has brought false criminal charges against individuals that have been dismissed by the Brunswick County District Attorney's Office," Bruce Mason stated in an emailed release.
Brunswick County District Attorney Jon David has requested a special prosecutor to handle the case, since White used to work as investigator in the DA's office.
Mason says Mayor White will pursue all legal remedies against the accuser.
White's next court date is October 15th at 9:30 a.m.
