WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Anna Lenczyk's goal in the 71st minute lifted league-leading Delaware to a 1-0 win over UNCW in Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer action on Sunday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Blue Hens remained perfect in the league with a 4-0 record and improved to 7-4 overall with the road win. UNCW saw its modest two-game winning streak halted with the set back and dipped to 7-5-1 overall and 2-2 in the league.
On the winning goal, Lenczyk pounced on a rebound for the winning margin. Melissa Pennington fired a shot from the leftside that was knocked away by UNCW goalkeeper Caitlin Hunter. Lenczyk was able to beat her defender from the right side to collect the loose ball and convert it for her third goal of the season.
The Seahawks held a 16-12 advantage in shots, but were unable to get anything past UD goalkeeper Jessica Levy, who finished with six saves on the afternoon. For Levy, it was her fourth shutout of the season.
UNCW pushed late in the game for the tying goal, but in the 87th minute junior Stephanie Rose's head from 10 yards out caromed off the crossbar and out of harm's way for the Blue Hens.
The Seahawks visit William & Mary on Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. when they next return to action.
