NC Santa man sentenced on solicitation charges

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A Cary man who played Santa Claus at North Carolina malls has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from accusations he solicited a 15-year-old girl over the Internet for sex.

Authorities say 70-year-old John Thomas Peters pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and soliciting a child by computer.

Peters was arrested in January at an Apex fast food restaurant where he had planned to meet a teen. He was also arrested in March on allegations that he also met up with a teen he found on Facebook.

Authorities say Peters called himself an amateur photographer looking for models.

Peters was sentenced to up to three years in prison and must register as a sex offender when he's released. It wasn't known if he had an attorney.
