WILMINTON, NC (WECT) - Saturday afternoon, dozens of people crowded inside Thalian Hall, but it wasn't for a performance, they came to pay tribute to Donn Ansell. Ansell was a prominent member of the community who passed away in August.
Ansell owned WAAV-AM in Wilmington for many years before selling to Cumulus Broadcasting in the mid-1990s. He continued to host the "Talk of the Town" morning radio show, before retiring in 2006 after more than two decades on the air. He also hosted show a on WILM-TV for several years, continuing to interview local politicians and newsmakers.
In addition to television and radio, Ansell was known for the role he played in the theater community, both on stage and in the industry as a whole.
"He was so supportive," said friend Tony Rivenbark. "He was so interested in everybody's work, he attended the theater a lot you could always tell when he was in the audience because he had a very distinctive laugh, and you always knew there was somebody out there pulling for you."
During the tribute people spoke about the many ways Ansell made a difference in their lives.
