NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Work is returning to normal at Elementis Chromium after fire crews searched for the source of a tripped smoke detector.

Workers were evacuated from the administrative laboratory building at the plant on Holly Shelter Road near Castle Hayne Thursday just before noon after a smoke detector sounded, according to Regulatory Manager Calvin Overcash.

Overcash says the company followed the emergency response plan.  Fire crews pinpointed the cause of the tripped detector to a defective ballast in a light fixture.

Workers have since returned.

The company makes chromium chemical products which are used in pigments and metal and plastic coatings.
