NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A man living in the Ogden area is planning a petition in hopes of keeping a potential cell tower away from the area.
Optima Towers will present a case to the New Hanover County Planning Board October 4 to build a 190-feet tower off Wendover Lane.
County Planning Director Chris O'Keefe said the request is pretty standard, but the company will have to prove there's a need for the tower in the area and that companies are going to use it.
Design plans show the tower would have a 48-feet fall radius, which is inside the county's mandatory minimum easement of 50 feet.
Resident Paul Passante strongly opposes the project, saying it would be a distraction and detriment to the area. He's rallying his neighbors to sign a petition against it.
"If I need to, in the next few days, take a step away from what I do for my work, I'll do it only because I think this will be very important in the long run," he said.
With the public hearing only a week away, he does not have much time to inspire some support.
"I guess that's the biggest obstacle we face," said Passante
He plans to present the petition to the county planning board during the special use hearing. Special use permits are given when projects are in harmony with the surrounding community.
