TACT's production of 'Guys and Dolls' has a large cast of children.
WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - In a musical about gangsters and gamblers, you may be surprised to see children on the stage, but they bring something unique to Frank Loesser's Guys and Dolls.
"It definitely adds a youthfulness to the show, and it makes it kind of comedic at some times," said actor J.J. Niemann.
Niemann plays Sky Masterson, a gambler willing to bet on anything, including whether he can win over the Save a Soul mission leader.
"He gets bet for a thousand dollars that he can take me out on a date to Havana," said actress Savannah Samuel who plays the character of Sarah Brown.
"And my bet with her is that I can fill her mission with a dozen sinners," said Niemann.
There are also two supporting characters: Nathan Detroit, another gambler searching for a place to hold a craps game while dodging his long-time fiance. And Miss Adelaide, a nightclub performer who tries desperately to get Nathan to marry her.
Despite a little big of illegal gambling, the heart of this story is family-friendly.
"There's obviously the great classic songs like Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat and Luck be a Lady, but there's also just great themes like love and also looking beyond people's exteriors," said Niemann.
"It's such a great story, and it's in such a great time period, and the costumes and it's just really beautiful," said Samuel.
And it's a great chance for the kids to learn the tricks of the theater trade.
"I think TACT (Thalian Association Children's Theater) really is an entryway for anybody who wants to do this professionally or in Wilmington or anywhere," said Niemann.
"If you give us these opportunities to play these big roles, I mean hey you're going to see something special when you come," said Samuel.
