WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) –Tuesday night, Wilmington city council voted to approve annexing an area for a condo complex off Gordon Road.
The vote was 6-1. The town house complex will have 84 units. That's 10 less than what the developer wanted. The developer had hoped to build a 94 unit complex on 10 acres of land near Farrington Farms. Neighbors are fighting the plan, saying Gordon Road can't handle the extra traffic. They claim the development will lead to more accidents on the street.
A bus lane must be made available for the development of WAVE transit access. An emergency access gate must be locked at all times. Raised crosswalks must be built through the development. Units will also be allowed to use city water pressure.
Also, council approved a new deal with Mandalay Baseball and the Atlanta Braves. Council passed it 6 to 1. Laura Padgett was the dissenting voice.
The Memorandum of Understanding spells out major points of agreement, but does not represent a final agreement. All parties involved agree that there will be at least one more agreement that lays out final details.
All of the agreements in the contract are contingent upon the city passing a $37 million bond referendum in November and the city acquiring land for the stadium. The city would pay the cost of the bonds with a two and a half cent property tax increase. The mayor said for the average homeowner in Wilmington, the tax increase would result in an additional $30 a year.
The Braves have committed to locating a single-A minor league team in Wilmington, should the stadium be built, with a 20 year commitment to the city.
General manager for the Braves, Frank Wren, said he is anxious and nervous about the November vote.
"We want it to happen and we don't want it just to happen for another feather in our cap," he said.
"We want it to happen because once fans and the people in Wilmington see what it's all about they're going to be really glad they did."
