SURF CITY, NC (WECT) - An entire community is coming together today to show their support for a cab driver, Charles Hawkesworth, beaten by a Camp Lejeune Marine one week ago.
Hawkesworth is currently recovering in Raleigh from facial reconstructive surgery.
The community of Surf City has organized a Pub Crawl: The Band in the Sand, Sunday from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. Bars hosting the event are Gilligans, Sears Landing, Crab Pot, Trailer Bar, Sandbar, and Brass Pelican.
For a $25 donation, a wristband will get you rides in a cab to and from the pubs as well as home.
There will be live auctions, a 50/50 raffle, discount food items, and more at each place.
There are also satellite locations with their own discount deals.
"All the proceeds will go towards medical bills for JR," said Kate Winzler, an organizer. "So far we have collected over $4000 and that does not include today's event."
A list of auction items and pubs participating can be found on a Facebook event page.
Community members say it's a tight knit area, and when one of their own is in trouble they want to help.
"I have never seen such a massive and universal response from everybody," said Winzler. "It's great because it has pulled everyone together and put others things aside just to make this happen this weekend."
Friday night, Beauchaines 211 was donating $5 per bottle of wine sold and servers were donating at least 5% of their tips to raise money for Hawkesworth's medical bills.
On Saturday, The Bistro was donating 100% of beer sales and $10 for every plate of shrimp and grits sold to help raise funds.
