SURF CITY, NC (WECT) – Have you ever wanted to start running? Or make sure you are running correctly? Walk to Run for beginners is a new program for people interested in running for fun, health and fitness.

The goal is to increase your fitness level while staying healthy and enjoying the sport. Teachers Linda Carlsen and Kathy Yakimovich will lead warm-up drills and each participant will walk or run at their own individual pace.

Classes begin September 25 and will be held Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 8:00 a.m. Each class will be an hour to an hour and a half, depending on what is being covered in the class session.

The culminating event for the program is the First Annual 5K Bridge Run on November 17 starting at 4:00 p.m. at the Surf City Community Center and ending at Soundside Park in time for the annual Christmas tree lighting.

"I am excited that Linda and Kathy are offering this new class and I can't wait to sign up," said Surf City Parks & Recreation Director Kristie Grubb. "A wonderful running class, an awesome first 5K and the spectacular Christmas Tree Lighting, November 17 is truly going to be an incredibly breathtaking day."

The program is for participants ages 14 and up. Register by Monday, September 24 at the Surf City Community Center at 201 Community Center Drive off J. H. Batts Road. Or you can call (910) 328-4887 to get your name on the list.

The cost is $80 for Surf City Community Center members and $95 for non-members.
