Warning for boaters who use GPS

Boaters will be unable to rely on Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment and possibly cell phones beginning Friday.

The disruption will affect people boating off the waters of North Carolina and parts of Florida. GPS will be unreliable because of an exercise by the Department of Defense.

Boaters should have maps to chart their courses and VHF radios to communicate on the water.

Testing periods (Eastern Time) are:

  • Friday, June 11,  11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, June 13, 8:00 a.m. – Noon
  • Monday, June 14, 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, June 17, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  • Friday, June 18, 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, June 19, 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, June 20, 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
