BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Friends of an 18-year-old who died in a car crash over the weekend are sending a message to the governor—they want something done about the road.
Aaron Michael Burke, Jr ran off Highway 133 around midnight Saturday night near Orton Plantation in Brunswick County, according to the State Highway Patrol. It happened at a curve in the road known as Orton Curve.
Officials in Brunswick County said the curve is dangerous and it has claimed a number of lives. Burke's friends created an online petition addressed to Gov. Beverly Perdue to have something changed.
"Speed plays a major factor in that entire road," said Capt. Tyler Johnson with the Boiling Spring Lakes Fire Department. "We have numerous accidents as people travel at high speeds and it is very dangerous."
Friends setup a Facebook page to share photos and memories of the 18-year-old.
"I was pretty shocked about it," said Michael Kruse, who is Aaron's cousin. "I couldn't believe it happened. I'm at a loss of words. It all happened so suddenly. I had just seen him the week before."
According to Highway Sgt. TD Wheeler, the 18 year old was air lifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead at approximately 12:45 a.m.
"There was no alcohol, no cell phone involved," said Sgt. Wheeler. "Maybe he fell asleep. There's no way of telling right now."
No other cars were involved.
