ROCKY POINT, NC (WECT) - A UNCW employee has been charged with six counts of second degree exploitation of a minor. Harvey Porter was arrested last Thursday at his home in Rocky Point for being in possession of child pornography.

The investigation began after the NC Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force was alerted that Porter may have been in possession of pornographic material.

Investigators obtained search warrants for his house and computer and found several videos with underage children, both male and female.

UNCW's public directory lists Porter as being an Electronics Specialist with the Business Affairs Department. Though investigators say they have no reason to believe that any crime occurred on campus.

According to a spokesperson for UNCW, Porter has been put on what's called "investigatory placement" with pay. This means he is relieved of his duties until the university is able to gather more information on the situation. The spokesperson said this is not a disciplinary action.

Porter has been employed with the university since 1996. He was originally hired as a UNCW police officer but took a voluntary pay decrease in 1997 to become a Computing Support Technician.

In 2005, Porter took a new position with UNCW as an Electronics Technician, which he has held since. He currently makes $40,000 a year.

This investigation was a joint effort by the Pender County Sheriff's Office, The State Bureau of Investigation and the NC Internet Crimes Against Children talk force.
