BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Somewhere along the line, the system appears to have broken down in Brunswick County. Our news department told you about it last week. It's a long and convoluted story. I won't try to recap the whole thing, but in a nutshell, according to a joint statement from the Sheriff's Office and the District Attorney's Office, an inmate sat in the Brunswick County Jail from December through early June, because someone did not set a hearing.
We don't know who should get the blame for this. The DA has started an internal investigation to find out what happened. But what I find concerning is how our public officials reacted to this. For weeks, our news team tried to find out what occurred. Nobody wanted to talk. But through public information and courthouse sources, they eventually got some solid information to report.
I think publicly elected officials need to be forthcoming with the good and the bad. But apparently, that's not how our Brunswick County leaders felt. District Attorney Jon David even got frustrated to the point that he cursed at one of our reporters.
Well, I understand his frustration. I get frustrated too when things don't go like they are supposed to. But I don't think any of that can compare to the frustration of being forgotten and sitting in jail for six months without a court date.
That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at email@example.com.

I am so happy to hear your comment tonight. My son has been sitting in Brunswick County Jail since August 9, 2011 with NO COURT DATE.
I am having the hardest time understanding how the court system is NOT working.
This is so frustrating!!!
Hopefully someone saw your comment tonight and will investigate what is going on with the Court!!!
Has anyone tried to interview the inmate? What was he sitting int here for?
That's a long time to wait, but the court system around here is in complete disarray....this gets even better, my son was in jail and had a court date. At the end of the day, the guard came to my son's sell and told him he was served with a "Failure to appear" that was issued by the court because he was not in court that day (how messed up is that?), not to mention they have him listed as if he were 2 different people, under his formal name and under his nickname. I don't trust the court system around here, it's ridiculous. My daughter was choked to the point of seeing spots and nearly passing-out before she got away from her boyfriend and fled her home and called police to file charges. They were given his whereabouts, description, and any other information she could think of, including where is mother lived in South Carolina just over the border in Little River. When we showed up for the court hearing we found out there was no court hearing because they said that he hadn't been served because he wasn't in North Carolina. Seems to me if you want to assault someone, just make sure you cross state lines, assault the person, and then cross back over....ta-dah....safe away from the long arm of the law. Sheesh.
