WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Two people rode a stolen moped to Racine Drive Sunday night where they tried to steal another moped, according to police.
Lucy Crockett with the WPD said someone called 911 just before 11:45 p.m. to report two men had tried to steal his moped. The caller initially said the men were armed and tried to shoot him.
The incident happened at the Campus Edge apartments and it was believed the robbers had fled onto the main campus of UNCW so the university issued an alert just after midnight.
An "all clear" message was sent less than an hour later after UNCW police stopped the men riding a moped across campus.
According to Crockett, the passenger on the moped surrendered, but the driver fled on the moped he was driving. Cpl. Schwartzel said further investigation revealed the men did not have a weapon and no shots were fired during the incident.
Police found the moped the robbers were riding abandoned behind Seahawk Square. The engine was still warm and the VIN revealed the moped had been reported stolen July 7 from the 2200 block of Wrightsville Avenue.
Authorities determined the pair rolled the second moped to the woods near Campus Edge Apartments and was trying to hotwire it when they were confronted by the victim and fled.
Deandre Sha'he Watkins, the passenger who surrendered, was charged with attempted felony larceny. The second man in the case remains at large. The mopeds have been returned to their owners.
