The detective on the case, Chris Latham, says that in the past, he's seen someone take a boat for a joy ride, or even a boat floating loose in the water, but this many thefts is rare.
Latham says whoever stole the boats knows what they're doing -- maybe not necessarily with crime, but with the waterways.
More than the thefts, Latham says that they've recovered a number of items from other boats that didn't leave the dock. He says someone's been grabbing rods, reels and just about anything off of boats.
His advice is to be aware of your surroundings.
There are no known suspects at this time, but police do have a few leads.
If you know anything about missing or stolen boats, you're asked to call the police department at 910-458-1246.
